last night my vancouver canucks, lost game 7 to the boston bruins, and congratulations to the bruins for winning the cup. iam very proud of my team for the wonderful year they gave us. and i am sad for the fans and the team, but that pain will pass, there is always next year.
But i am concerned, for the behavior of some sports fans to go out of control, and to even riot, just because there team lost. i am a very passionate sports fan and i love and support all my teams, but if we lose the stanley cup, superbowl or world series, does that give me the right to get in my wheelchair, go down the streets where i live, yelling screaming and causing damage to my neighbors property, just because we lost, And i feel bad for the good fans of vancouver, who will absorbe the loss with dignity, and because of the rioting, the city gets a bad reputation, of being a bad sports city, when they lose.
Lets hope the people responcible, for the damage, will learn that there are safer ways, to dissipate, the pain you feel as a fan, my hope is all sports fans, win or lose will learn to celebrate there team always in a positive way, thomcatpurrs (thom).
I'm with you, Thom, in that human beings, who supposedly have a higher level of intelligence than the beasts who roam the planet, would resort to such banal ways to dissent. I too am an avid fan of hockey, yet, we must remember that this is just a game. Perhaps it is because our sports teams are considered "professional" and have the salaries to prove it, that some people have forgotten that this is supposed to be fun.
ReplyDeleteI've always been a firm believer that, while we all have rights, once you tromp on mine, then you lose the right to yours. So, yes, I do hope that with all the many photos being posted, the police are able to apprehend the culprits and prosecute them to the greatest extent of the law. Not only was there rampant pillage and destruction of property, the perpetrators had no regard for people who could have been injured or killed by the fire bombs, setting squad cars on fire, etc. And what if there had been people in those businesses that were vandalized?
This brings me to yet another sore point of mine - the role that alcohol played in that riotous display. If people cannot handle their alcoholic beverages, then they have no business drinking. Alcohol decreases the inhibitions one might have, therefore, while the sentiments may have been the same, without the added boost, these so-called fans might have expressed their dissatisfaction at the outcome of the game quite differently.
Living in a city that is deemed the 12th most dangerous in the USA, I resent the idea that people cannot live here for fear of their lives. There are many wonderful people, both here and in Vancouver, whose efforts have been focused on making the cities a beautiful and welcoming place to visit and live. In just a few moments of international footage, these selfish, childish people all but destroyed the image that has taken so long to build up. Jail or prison cannot repair the damage overnight so I hope these people have lots of time to reflect on what they have done.
